Indiana American Water Schedules Main Flushing In Terre Haute District for August 1 – September 23, 2022
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (July 5, 2022) Indiana American Water will conduct water main flushing in the Terre Haute service area beginning on Monday, August 1 and continuing through Friday, September 23, 2022.
The company conducts the annual maintenance program to assure high-quality water service and to ensure fire hydrants are operational.
According to Terre Haute Operations Manager David Baker, “Water main and fire hydrant flushing is an important part of a regular maintenance program for water distribution systems. Indiana American Water consistently meets or exceeds all drinking water standards.”
No interruptions in water service are anticipated as a result of the work. Customers may experience a slight drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration while this program is underway. Customers should refrain from doing laundry during the time of day the flushing program is taking place in or near their neighborhood.
If tap water is discolored, Indiana American Water recommends allowing several cold-water faucets to run for a short time until the water runs clear. Using more than one faucet allows the water to clear more quickly.
As a part of the flushing program, Indiana American Water will temporarily change the disinfectant used in the water treatment process starting on Monday, July 18 to support a systemwide flushing of the Terre Haute district. Indiana American Water’s Terre Haute system, Sullivan Vigo Rural Water, and the company’s systems in Farmersburg, Prairieton, Marion Heights and Riley will all be using chlorine rather than chloramines during this time.
Free chlorine and chloramines are both federally approved methods of disinfection. As always, the drinking water delivered to customers will be regularly monitored to ensure that it surpasses or meets all federal and state drinking water regulations.
Customers that normally take special precautions to remove chloramines from tap water, such as dialysis centers, medical facilities and aquatic pet owners, should continue to take the same precautions during the temporary switch from chloramines to free chlorine.
You may notice a chlorine taste and odor in your drinking water while free chlorine is utilized. If you are especially sensitive to the taste and odor of chlorine, try keeping an open container of drinking water in your refrigerator. This will enable the chlorine to dissipate and reduce the chlorine taste.
