New York American Water Postpones Annual Flushing of Water Mains and Hydrants in Long Island Service Areas Until Fall 2020

MERRICK, N.Y. (April 13, 2020) – New York American Water will postpone the annual flushing of its Long Island water distribution systems, scheduled to start April 20, until the fall of 2020. The company made the decision to postpone flushing given the ongoing public health emergency.

The postponement of flushing will not impact water quality and all water delivered to customers is safe to drink and meets all local, state and federal drinking water standards.

Flushing is part of the company’s system maintenance program and will be conducted in the fall of 2020, after the peak water use months of summer have passed. An updated flushing schedule will be provided to customers in advance of the fall flushing.
