West Virginia American Water Awards 2020 Environmental Grants

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (May 21, 2020) – West Virginia American Water announced today that four recipients received funding through the company’s 2020 Environmental Grant Program. The program supports innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and groundwater supplies within West Virginia American Water’s service territory.

“For nearly a decade, this grant program has invested thousands of dollars into dozens of communities across West Virginia to support water conservation and source water protection efforts,” said Robert Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “We applaud this year’s recipients for their continued commitment to protecting the environment and enhancing the health of our watersheds.”

In early May, a committee of West Virginia American Water representatives reviewed a host of applications from programs and initiatives across the state. Four organizations were chosen to receive $10,000 in total funding for their water conservation, source water protection and watershed improvement efforts. Awardees include:

  • Coal River Group ($2,500) for the youth water sampling program along the Big, Little and Lower Coal Rivers in Boone and Kanawha Counties
  • Cub Scouts of St. Albans ($1,800) to support an urban watershed improvement project along the Kanawha River
  • Wayne County Farm Bureau/Guyan Conservation District ($2,500) to install drip irrigation systems in Spring Valley High School’s greenhouse
  • WVU Extension Service ($3,200) to support the Grazing and Pasture Improvement project across southwestern West Virginia

“The Environmental Grant Program allows us to build and foster partnerships with environmental and recreational groups to sustain and protect our drinking water sources,” said Erica Pauken, source water protection state lead for West Virginia American Water. “This year’s projects further support our source water protection plans and improve our environmental footprint across West Virginia.”
