West Virginia American Water Pays Tribute to 9/11 Victims on 23rd Anniversary

Charleston, W.Va., (Sept. 4, 2024) – West Virginia American Water announced today that employee volunteers have installed 2,977 American flags to commemorate the lives lost during the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001. The flags have been placed at West Virginia American Water’s Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant, visible from the I-64 and I-77 split in Charleston. West Virginia American Water joins American Water in this effort, as an additional 2,977 flags are placed on the RCA Pier Park outside the company’s corporate headquarters in Camden, N.J.
“While it’s been 23 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, we continue to feel the lasting impact it’s had on our nation”, said Rob Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “This flag memorial is a subtle but important reminder of a day we will never forget.”
The flags will remain on display until September 13, after which they will be donated to the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veteran Cemetery in Dunbar.
“As a 22-year military veteran, the events of September 11, 2001, and the global events that followed, had a profound impact on not only my life, but on so many Americans,” said Ben Lewis, operations supervisor at West Virginia American Water and Community Lead for American Water’s Military and Veteran Employee Business Resource Group. “I appreciate the work of our employee volunteers in making this tribute a reality.”
As an annual tradition, the flag memorial will serve as a moment of reflection and remembrance in honor of the lives lost, survivors, their families and first responders.
