Illinois American Water asking Motorists to Avoid Neil Street in Champaign; Water Main Repairs Underway

Champaign, Ill. – (Sept. 8, 2022) – At around 8 p.m. tonight, a large water main break occurred at Neil Street and Stadium Drive in Champaign, Ill.  Illinois American Water crews arrived on site quickly and began working to make repairs.

The work is complex and requires the team to work as safely as possible. This work also requires utility locates to be completed before the water main can be repaired; this is critical for safety. Therefore, Illinois American Water is asking for patience as the local water team completes this work.

Motorists are also asked to avoid the area. Traffic is being diverted in all directions on Neil Street for the safety of Illinois American Water team members, Public Works and motorists. Please seek alternate routes until further notice.

At this time, this water main break has resulted in some customers in the area experiencing low pressure or no water. When water service is restored, these customers will be under a boil water order. Impacted customers have been notified about the need to bring their water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes prior to using for drinking or cooking. Water is OK for bathing, laundry and other common uses. Impacted customers will be notified when the boil order has been lifted.
