Illinois American Water Celebrates Safety Excellence Milestones in the Company’s Southern Illinois Service Area

Alton, Ill. – (June 28, 2022) – Illinois American Water is highlighting safety excellence achieved by the Company’s southern Illinois teams during National Safety Month. The team members celebrated several years of operation without lost-time accidents. The Grafton wastewater service team celebrated seven years in May; and the Jerseyville water and wastewater teams celebrated nine years at the beginning of June.

Ethan Steinacher, senior manager of operations, credited the teams for their commitment to working safely. “Maintaining, repairing and upgrading our local water and wastewater systems is complex work. It requires a strong commitment to safety, without compromise.”

Illinois American Water employees work around the clock to deliver safe, reliable water and wastewater service to homes and businesses. Employees experience different working environments including confined spaces and working among motorists and in extreme weather. During National Safety Month, employees participate in the company’s #moveover social media campaign to remind motorists about Scott’s Law and the importance of moving over for vehicles.

Employees are provided personal protective equipment (PPE), safety training and more to support safe work practices. Hands-on training, online classes, job-site audits and continuous safety talks also support safety in the workplace.

Employees also participate in the Company’s Near Miss Program to help identify possible unsafe working conditions. The Near Miss reports are investigated, and corrective actions are applied and shared across the company to benefit the safety of all employees. Employees are also encouraged to become Certified Safe Workers to remain committed to safety throughout the organization.

Steinacher said, “Our team looks out for each other. They continuously evaluate and act to remove hazards to prevent injuries. There is nothing more important than the safety of our team members.”
