Illinois American Water Completes Water Main Repair; Neil Street to Reopen

Champaign, Ill. – (Sept. 9, 2022) – Illinois American Water has completed repairs to the water main which broke last night – Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022 - on Neil Street in Champaign. Crews worked quickly to isolate the leak last night, restoring water service to impacted customers. The repair to the water main was completed this morning, on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022.

According to Brian Wiemers, senior manager of operations, “About 12-feet of water main was replaced.” He continued, “Our team made this significant repair quickly to support reliable water service to their neighbors. I commend them for their efforts and for working safely.”

Wiemers added, “We also want to thank Champaign Public Works and the Champaign Police Department for assisting our team through the night. Their support and teamwork helped to keep all of our team members safe. We really appreciate the great working relationship we have with one another.”

Road restoration is expected to be completed this afternoon, and Neil Street should be reopened to traffic later today, Friday, Sept. 9, 2022.

Customers currently under a boil water order will be notified when the boil water order has been lifted. Until then, impacted customers should continue to bring their water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes prior to using for drinking or cooking. Water is OK for bathing, laundry and other common uses. Impacted customers will be notified when the boil order has been lifted.
