Illinois American Water to Replace Water Main and Four Distribution Valves in Sterling; Road Closure Needed for Employee Safety

Sterling, Ill. (Aug. 10, 2021) – Next week, Illinois American Water will be completing critical upgrades to Sterling’s water distribution system.  The work involves replacing water main and installing four distribution valves at the intersection of LeFevre and Locust in Sterling.

In order to complete this work with the least impact to customers, and to keep the Hospital in service, Illinois American Water needs several days to replace this critical infrastructure.  Therefore, the intersection of LeFevre and Locust will be closed for several days starting on Monday, Aug. 16.

Motorists should use caution when driving in the area and obey traffic signs, detour routes and flaggers in the area.  If possible, motorists should avoid the area.  Weather permitting, road restoration should be completed, and all lanes reopened by Monday, Aug. 23.

Charlotte Dunne, operations superintendent for the Sterling water system, said, “This project is very complex in nature.  While our team works as quickly as possible, our number one priority is working safely.  We appreciate the community’s cooperation as we make this important investment which will support reliable water service for years to come.”

Water service is not expected to be impacted by this work.  Should something unexpected occur, Illinois American Water will reach out to customers with critical information.  The Company is coordinating the work with IDOT, the City of Sterling and area businesses.

Illinois American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 1.3 million people.
