Richmond Road Water Treatment Plant Recognized by Energy and Environment Cabinet for Performance Excellence
Dateline City:
LEXINGTON, Ky.
, (July 31, 2014) – Kentucky American Water’s Richmond Road
Station water treatment plant in Lexington has been named 2013 AWOP
Turbidity Champion in the large utility category by Kentucky’s
Energy and Environment Cabinet as part of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP). The
voluntary program challenges treatment plants to reduce turbidity
levels below those required by state and federal regulations and is
designed as a mechanism to enhance public health protection of
drinking water.
Turbidity refers to the cloudiness of water caused by large
numbers of very small individual particles. Turbidity can
interfere with the disinfection process in tap water treatment.
Treatment facilities participating in AWOP work to optimize
performance and operations of water treatment facilities through
proactive efforts. The Kentucky Division of Water assesses
participating water treatment plants independently based on water
treatment data.
As of 2013, there were 131 public surface water treatment plants
in Kentucky. Of those, 61 facilities met the 2013 AWOP goals, and
46 serve populations of greater than 10,000 people. Of those 46
facilities, Kentucky American Water’s Richmond Road Station is the
2013 AWOP Champion.
“We’re delighted to be recognized by the Kentucky Division of
Water as the 2013 AWOP Turbidity Champion,” said Cheryl Norton,
president of Kentucky American Water. “We are used to setting high
standards for ourselves so that we can provide our customers with
excellent service every day, but it is always especially
significant to be recognized by others in the industry for our
efforts. I’m very proud of our Richmond Road Station team.”
