New Jersey American Water Installs New 36-Inch Water Main in Somerville and Water Service Will Soon Be Restored
Boil Water Advisory Remains in Effect for Customers in Four Towns; Mandatory Outdoor Conservation Order Also Remains in Effect
CAMDEN, N.J. – JULY 2, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. – New Jersey American Water is pleased to report that crews successfully installed a new section of 36-inch water main on Rt. 206 in Somerville and water service will soon begin to flow to the areas that have been impacted by the previous main’s failure.
“We installed the new section of main overnight and are now beginning the process of disinfecting it,” said Carmen Tierno, Senior Director of Central Operations, New Jersey American Water. “Customers may experience air and or discoloration as our crews fill the pipes and flush the system. If all goes as planned, we anticipate that customers currently without water should have water by late this afternoon, but all customers under the boil water advisory will still need to boil their water.”
While water pressure should begin to return to all impacted customers, the mandatory boil water advisory that was issued on June 30 for customers residing in Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Raritan Borough and Somerville (Raritan System PWSID: NJ2004002) will remain in effect until bacteriological samples taken show that water meets standards. This testing process takes at least an additional 24 hours or more from when the system is fully pressurized. Customers should continue to boil their water or use bottled water until they are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. Additionally, residential customers in Hunterdon and Somerset County are also still under a mandatory outdoor conservation notice to help preserve water supplies until the system is fully recovered. Residential customers in Hunterdon and Somerset County should refrain from outdoor irrigation and other nonessential outdoor water use, such as washing cars and topping off swimming pools. Customers will be notified when this conservation notice is lifted through the company’s emergency notification system.
