Mon/Yough Trail Council Receives Keep Communities Flowing Grant from American Water Charitable Foundation

Grant supports the construction of a hydration station along the Great Allegheny Passage

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2020) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that the Mon/Yough Trail Council (M/YTC) has been selected as a 2020 American Water Charitable Foundation Keep Communities Flowing grant recipient. The M/YTC received approximately $19,000 to install a hydration station at its Boston trailhead.

The Keep Communities Flowing grant program provides community-based grants to support programs and projects that connect with one or more of American Water’s core focus areas of Water and the Environment, Water and Healthy Living, Environmental Education and Community Sustainability. M/YTC is one of 12 grant recipients in 2020 and plays a key role in the planning and execution of community-based projects, focused on water conservation and environmental education.

“Funding provided through the Keep Communities Flowing grant program supports water-inspired and environmentally focused programs and projects that positively impact American Water communities and surrounding ecosystems,” said Carrie Williams, president of the American Water Charitable Foundation. “We are proud to offer these types of funding opportunities to further American Water’s ongoing commitment to being good neighbor and steward of the environment.”

The M/YTC section of the Great Allegheny Passage through the Boston area receives close to 70,000 visits a year. The grant will support the construction of a hydration station, which includes a water fountain, bottle and pet bowl fillers, and a cleaning hose attachment for one the busiest trailheads along the Great Allegheny Passage.

“Thanks to the generous support of the American Water Charitable Foundation, the new hydration station will provide clean and safe drinking water to all visitors while promoting sustainability with the newest bottle fill feature,” said Mon/Yough Trail Council President Mark Place. “Pennsylvania American Water has been a leading corporate partner for many years supporting the trail and trail activities.”

Construction of the hydration station is underway and expected to be completed during the spring of 2021.

“American Water's generous gift to the Great Allegheny Passage will benefit all those enjoying the trail in Elizabeth Township and around Boston, a great tourist stop," said Great Allegheny Passage Executive Director Brian Perry. “Big thanks to the Mon/Yough Trail Council for its work maintaining the Great Allegheny Passage through Elizabeth Township, and to American Water for making the trail as hospitable as possible for local trail travelers and visitors from around the world.”
