Pennsylvania American Water Announces $11.3 Million McKeesport Wastewater System Upgrade
McKeesport, Pa. (Sept.14, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that the company is investing approximately $11.3 million to upgrade its McKeesport wastewater system. The investment will replace and upgrade 5,000 feet of sewer main in the City of McKeesport and install a new vault to store wastewater during significant storm events.
“This system upgrade will replace or rehabilitate large sewer mains to modernize the aging wastewater infrastructure,” said Pennsylvania American Water Senior Project Engineer Dan Haught. “It will help to protect the environment and local watersheds from the potential negative impacts that can occur when sewer infrastructure deteriorates.”
Pennsylvania American Water contractors will begin replacing the sewer main along White Street between SR 148 and Juniata Street on Monday, September 18. The company anticipates the completion of this project in late November 2023.
Starting in late September, the company will begin the rehabilitation of the sewer main in the following areas:
- 5th Avenue between Evans Avenue and White Street
- White Street between 5th Avenue and Ravine Street
- Ravine Street between White Street and Evans Avenue
The company anticipates the completion of this project in March 2024. Work hours for these projects will be Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work outside these hours is only expected if required to maintain the project schedule.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the project areas. The company encourages motorists to find alternative routes and avoid the construction area during project hours.
Pennsylvania American Water’s McKeesport system serves approximately 12,000 customers in the City of McKeesport, Duquesne, Dravosburg, and Port Vue Boroughs. Since acquiring the system in 2017, Pennsylvania American Water has already invested $62 million in McKeesport’s wastewater infrastructure and plans to invest an additional $35.4 million during the next five years.
This combined $97.4 million investment will improve the water quality in the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers, achieve environmental compliance, improve reliability, and support significant system upgrades.
This year, the company is also improving its water systems in Allegheny, Fayette, and Washington counties, including installing 33 miles of new mains to enhance service reliability and fire protection. The total cost of these upgrades is around $73 million.
These infrastructure upgrade projects are an essential investment in public health and safety and help support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.
