Pennsylvania American Water Announces $12.5 Million Fall Greater Pittsburgh Water System Upgrade
Water main replacement projects will start next week in Bethel Park, Finleyville, Mount Lebanon and Whitehall
Pittsburgh, Pa. (Sept. 30, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that it is replacing and upsizing approximately 5 miles of small, aging water main this fall in the Greater Pittsburgh area to improve service reliability and fire protection for residents. The cost of these system upgrades is approximately $12.5 million.
Starting next week, Pennsylvania American Water contractors will begin installing new water mains in the following areas:
- Academy Place, Greenhurst Drive to Summer Place, in Mt. Lebanon
- Baptist Road, from Weyman Road to Hamilton Road, in Whitehall
- Brownsville Road Extension, from Chevy Chase Street to Don Street, in Finleyville
- Fort Couch Road, from Donati Road to Dorchester Drive, in Bethel Park
- McKee Drive, from Baptist Road to Norma Drive, in Whitehall
Most project work hours will be Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Project hours for Brownsville Road Extension and Baptist Road will be Monday – Thursday, 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., as part of the upgrade. Work outside these hours is only expected if required to maintain the project schedule.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the project area. The company encourages motorists to find alternative routes and avoid the construction area during project hours.
Customers will be notified before the start of construction. Final street restorations will be completed in the Spring of 2024.
This fall, Pennsylvania American Water contractors will also install new water mains in the following communities:

- Meadowlark Drive
Whitehall Borough
- Grove Road
During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and lower-than-normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences.
This year, the company is also improving its water systems in the Greater Pittsburgh area, including Fayette and Washington counties, by installing 33 miles of new mains to enhance service reliability and fire protection. The total cost of these upgrades year to date is around $73 million.
These infrastructure upgrade projects are an essential investment in public health and safety and help support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.
