Pennsylvania American Water Employees Receive “Source Water Champion Award”

Punxsutawney, Pa. (April 22, 2020) – Pennsylvania American Water is recognizing two Punxsutawney employees for their ongoing and outstanding efforts to protect local watersheds. Big Run water treatment plant operators, Chris Bish and Doug Hollenbaugh were recently honored with Pennsylvania American Water’s Source Water Champion Award.

“Chris and Doug’s dedication to source water protection goes beyond the day-to-day activities that their job descriptions require,” said Punxsutawney Supervisor David Drozd. “Clean water does not happen without environmental leadership and both of these employees have dedicated themselves to monitoring and reporting activities that could have a negative impact on water quality.”

Bish and Hollenbaugh were nominated for the award by Drozd, who added that the workers’ routine sampling and watershed monitoring efforts far exceed expectations. Bish and Hollenbaugh began collecting wet chemistry and bacteriological samples at ten sites throughout Clearfield and Jefferson counties in 2017.

“The goal of Pennsylvania American Water’s Source Water Protection Program is to manage risks to drinking water supplies that serve our customers,” said Josh Dunkle, source water protection lead for Western Pennsylvania. “By relying on employee and customer engagement, the program provides a better understanding of the importance of protecting source water while promoting active engagement in the process.”

Bish and Hollenbaugh also are active community members and volunteered in support of the Punxsutawney Rotary Club, Game Commission, and the Jefferson County Conservation District’s effort to plant 1,000 seedlings to reforest an area that once served as a 20-acre reservoir for the Punxsutawney system.
