Virginia American Water Invests $1.2M in Alexandria to Continue Reliable Water Service ALEXANDRIA, V.A.

ALEXANDRIA, V.A. – October 12, 2021 – Virginia American Water will replace approximately 1,700 feet of aging water main in Alexandria beginning the week of October 18, 2021 to continue to advance water service reliability and increase water flows for household consumption and fire protection in the Old Town community. This project is part of Virginia American Water’s multimillion-dollar initiative to accelerate the renewal of aging water infrastructure to our communities throughout the state.

The company will invest $1.2M to upgrade aging 6-inch and 8-inch water lines with new, 12-inch ductile iron main along the following streets:

  • South Washington Street from Gibbon Street to Prince Street

Virginia American Water’s local contractor, Utilities Unlimited, will begin work on S Washington Street on or about October 18 and expects to finish by the end of May 2022, weather permitting. Work hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work outside of these hours is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. Final street restorations will be completed in the Summer of 2022.

While working on S. Washington Street, there may be partial lane closures in both directions. A minimum of one lane will remain open to traffic at all times, except when physically impossible. All traffic control will be coordinated with local police or road authorities. Motorists should use caution, obey traffic signs, and follow detour routes when driving in the area. Access to residential and business ingress/egress shall be always maintained. Virginia American Water values the safety of its workers and advises drivers and pedestrians to take caution in the vicinity of work sites.

Virginia American Water will be hosting a live, virtual information session to learn more about the South Washington Street water main replacement project on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Representatives from the company will provide an overview of the project and its benefits, as well as answer commonly asked questions.
