Virginia American Water Proudly Recognizes Healthy Harvest Food Bank as an American Water Charitable Foundation 2023 STEM Education Grantee

Alexandria, V.A. – Jan. 10, 2024 – The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established by American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., recently awarded Healthy Harvest Food Bank a 2023 STEM Education grant. Healthy Harvest Food Bank offers comprehensive hunger solutions that target the Northern Neck and Upper Peninsula’s most vulnerable neighbors.

“At Virginia American Water, giving back to the communities we serve is at the core of everything that we do,” said Barry Suits, President, Virginia American Water. “The American Water Charitable Foundation’s STEM Education grant allows us to support organizations that align with our mission and provide essential funding to continue their efforts, making our communities stronger.”

The $25,000 grant will support the Healthy Harvest Fresh Education plan, a strategic and systematic program to impact the knowledge, availability, and consumption of healthy food and sustainable food production systems within the Northern Neck and Upper Middle Peninsula.

“We are gaining momentum in an effort to change the face of the food bank for generations to come by bridging the gap between food-insecurity and education,” said Cindy Balderson, Vice President & Development Director, Healthy Harvest Food Bank. “With support from the American Water Charitable Foundation and our friends at Virginia American Water, we’re constructing an aquaponics education and production center, while continuously producing fresh, locally grown food.”

The STEM Education grant is part of the American Water Charitable Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, focusing on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities.
