Virginia American Water Proudly Recognizes the American Water Charitable Foundation 2022 Water and Environment Grantees

Recipients include three nonprofit organizations in Virginia American Water’s service areas

Alexandria, VA September 29, 2022 – The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established by American Water, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, recently announced three organizations served by Virginia American Water were awarded a 2022 Water and Environment Grant.

“Virginia American Water strongly believes in being a good neighbor and steward of the environment,” said Barry Suits, President of Virginia American Water. “The American Water Charitable Foundation supports this initiative by providing funding for projects related to clean water, conservation, education and community sustainability. We congratulate our three Virginia-based grant recipients and thank them for the great work they continue to do in the communities we serve.”

The Water and Environment grant is part of the American Water Charitable Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, which is focused on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities.  The 2022 recipients include the following:

James River Association received funding for Hopewell High School students to participate in field-based watershed curriculum experiences on the James River to increase environmental literacy and gain an understanding and appreciation of human impact on the environment.

Friends of the Lower Appomattox River received funding to protect and improve the water quality, natural environment, and public green space of the Appomattox River while providing

more equitable access to the outdoor environment for environmental education and water-based recreation for residents.

Friends of the Occoquan received funding to promote healthy waterways by installing rain barrels, creating community gardens and hosting river clean-ups. The rain barrel program will educate the community on the benefits of using rain barrels to decrease erosion, stormwater

pollution and runoff while the community garden project will include the production of food and pollinator gardens, with a foundation as a water conserving garden.

“The American Water Charitable Foundation is pleased to partner with organizations across Virginia American Water to provide equitable and accessible projects and programs focused on clean water, environmental education, access to water-based recreation and more,” said Carrie Williams, president, American Water Charitable Foundation.  “Funding from the Water and Environment grant creates high-impact projects that engage communities in learning how every drop counts.”
