West Virginia American Water Awards over $18,000 to Local Fire Departments Across the State

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Aug. 10, 2023) – West Virginia American Water announced today the recipients of its 11th annual Firefighting Support Grant program. This year, the company will provide $18,375 in financial assistance to 20 fire departments and emergency management agencies located within the company’s service area.

“Our annual Firefighting Support Grant helps provide firefighters and emergency professionals with access to the resources they need to keep our communities safe across West Virginia,” said Robert Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “We can’t thank our first responders enough for their dedication, courage and bravery in serving on the front lines each day to protect our people and come to our aid in times of need.”

Since 2013, West Virginia American Water’s Firefighting Support Grant has awarded 134 grants totaling over $130,000 to fire departments and emergency management agencies across the state.

The program covers a wide range of fire department expenses associated with personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, training and related activities that will be used to support community fire protection. The Huntington Fire Department was one of the recipients of this year’s grant program. 

“This grant program and our ongoing partnership with West Virginia American Water has served as an important enhancement to protecting the lives and property of the people of our city,” said Huntington Fire Chief Greg Fuller. “We appreciate all their team has done for us in the past and look forward to continuing to work together in serving our citizens in the future.”

A team of West Virginia American Water employees selected the grant recipients through a rigorous screening and application review process. The selected organizations and their funding fulfilments are:

Boone County

  • Danville Volunteer Fire Department ($615) to purchase Stihl Pole Saw
  • Morrisvale Volunteer Fire Department ($975) to purchase a Milwaukee M18 18V Combo kit, three 4 amphr batteries and two tool bags
  • Racine Volunteer Fire Department ($898) to purchase two Milwaukee light towers and two M-18 battery operated light towers
  • Van Volunteer Fire Department ($944) to purchase five Milwaukee cordless search lights and one Milwaukee light tower
  • Whitesville Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase a Physio Lifepak 1000 AED

Cabell County

  • Huntington Fire Department ($979) to purchase two FarmBoss 271 chainsaws
  • Milton Volunteer Fire Department ($854) to purchase a SKED Basic Rescue System
  • Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department ($960) to purchase an emergency plug

Fayette County

  • Ansted Certified Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase an Akron Revolution 4-inch Intake Valve

Kanawha County

  • Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department ($952) to purchase seven FIRE-DEX Particulate Blocking Fire Hoods
  • Charleston Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase 27 personal flotation devices
  • Institute Volunteer Fire Department ($979) to purchase an ALTAIR Mult-Gas Detector, a waterproof first aid kit for a rescue boat and two NRS Rescue Paddles
  • Nitro Fire Department ($990) to purchase a CMC clutch, an Omni sling and a double pulley

Lewis County

  • Weston Volunteer Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase two MB30 EMT bags and two 28" collapsible traffic cone kits

Logan County

  • Lake Volunteer Fire Department ($886) to purchase two hydrant wrenches and two low level strainers

Mercer County

  • East River Volunteer Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase 50-foot sections of fire hose
  • Oakvale Volunteer Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase a thermal imaging camera

Putnam County

  • Bancroft Volunteer Fire Department ($987) to purchase seven hose adapters and valves

Webster County

  • Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department ($1,000) to purchase a portable water pump

Statewide

  • K9 Search and Rescue Services of West Virginia ($350) to purchase SARTOPO/CALTOPO GPS Technology for searches and rescues
