West Virginia American Water Responds to Summers County Train Derailment

OAK HILL, W.Va. (Mar. 8, 2023) – West Virginia American Water continues to monitor water quality along the New River following a CSX train derailment in Summers County. As part of our business continuity plan, the company has chosen to temporarily stop drawing water from the New River and enhance its treatment processes, as necessary. Customers should see no impact to their service as a result of this action. The health and safety of our customers is a priority, and there are currently no drinking water advisories in place because of this incident.

West Virginia American Water remains in close contact with first responders at the site of the derailment, including CSX, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health. Should the need arise for a drinking water advisory, customers will be notified upon that development.
