INDUSTRIAL PRETREATMENT PROGRAM

The Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) is a set of rules approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and part of Illinois American Water’s wastewater tariff. The IPP applies to industrial wastewater customers and addresses the wastes that are acceptable and not acceptable to discharge into the wastewater system, directly or indirectly.

These pretreatment rules are in place to protect our communities, customers, and employees. For example, the IPPs help to:

  • Prevent the introduction of pollutants into the wastewater treatment system that would interfere with the treatment process, contaminate the effluent or treatment residuals (sludge), or pass through the treatment process to the waters or atmosphere.
  • Comply with state and federal requirements related to treatment effluent, discharge permits, sludge use and disposal requirements, and more.
  • Protect our employees who work in our wastewater treatment facilities as well as the general public.
  • Promote reuse and recycling of industrial wastewater and treatment residuals.
